Would You Pay $9.95 Per Month to See Unlimited In-Theater Movies?

MoviePass, a startup business being run by Mitch Lowe, an early Netflix executive, is offering an all-you-can-view (in-theater) movie opportunity for $9.95 per month.

According to this Bloomberg article, Lowe’s proposal will help struggling theaters by getting people into the seats with this low-priced viewing option. His company, MoviePass, benefits by collecting people’s movie viewing habits and eventually using that data to target advertisements or other marketing materials.

Those who don’t like the idea of Big Brother, probably won’t be too interested in this offer.

However, if the idea of giving up your habits to data collectors…which many of us do already via grocery and other loyalty programs…doesn’t bother you too much, and you enjoy going to the theater to see movies, this might be for you.

Right now, MoviePass is offering a two-week free trial, after which you’ll be charged the regular $9.95 per month rate.

The $9.95 monthly charge is per person, so if you want to binge on in-theater movies with someone, they’ll need a membership, too.

And, an Android or iOS smartphone is needed to use MoviePass.

Unfortunately, you have to sign up for the service before you can see participating theaters…they’re shown on the MoviePass app.

You can try this link for searching participating theaters by zip code…be aware, it’s very slow and not guaranteed to work.

This is an interesting concept, but I’m not sure how sustainable the business model will be.

If you’re a movie buff, it might be worth a try.

You can view MoviePass’ FAQs here if you want more info.

I think I’ll be passing on this deal for a variety of reason, but I’d love to hear if you give it a go and what your experiences are.
