Samsung Black Friday TV Sets – Complete List

Tis the season for Samsung’s Black Friday TV sale. I bought a TV last year during the Black Friday sale season. I like the way Samsung TVs pop with color and brightness. They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but my family likes them.
One thing to keep in mind, Samsung controls their prices through all of their authorized dealers, so you should see the same prices everywhere, although some stores could thrown in special side deals like a gift card or a bonus item.
This year I am on the hunt for a 4K TV and have done quite a bit or research on the sets. I like my TVs big, so I am shooting for a 70” or above. I usually am a bang for the buck type of shopper, but won’t sacrifice too much picture quality.
We aren’t offering a complete review of the Samsung line of 4K TVs here, but some simple differences can help steer you in the right direction.
- Different price/quality lines – Samsung has a budget line (6000 series), a mid range line (7000 series) and a high end line (8000 and 9000 series). The budget sets will offer less color richness and picture vitality than their pricier siblings. Some colors are good, but others appear flat.
- The lower end sets will offer slower refresh rates than their other lines too. How quickly a picture is refreshed will make for a smoother picture in quick motion scenes. Make sure you look at the real refresh rate and not Samsungs own made up “Clear Motion Rate”. A motion rate of 60 Hz is too slow, 120 Hz is mid range and 240 Hz is great.
- The 7000 series offers better picture quality than the 6000 series, but most of the 7000 series sets are still using standard UHD. The exception being the JS7000 and JS700D sets where they are listed as SUHD utilizing the quantum dot display (see below).
- Samsung is a pioneer in the curved panel. They look neat, but some are fans and some are not. If you have a straight on viewing angle you may notice more depth and a more expansive field of view. However, the price is a little higher than those in the same series of flat screens. However, the price difference is diminishing somewhat.
- Upscaling is the ability of the TV to take 720P and 1080P signals and pump them up to simulate 4K. Some sets do this better than others and Samsung and Sony are the best at it. My mom has an older 2014 model Samsung and the picture her 720P and 1080i cable is spectacular. Since most of my content will be 720P and 1080i, I want to make sure I get the best upscale ability out there. Upscaling isn’t talked about too much, but for me it is the most important feature. The good news is that Samsung puts their state of the art upscaling engine in all of their 4K TVs. The bad news is that it isn’t quite as good as it was a couple of years ago and overall picture quality is still limited to the TVs overall ability to produce a good quality picture. The reviews are mixed on Samsung’s upscale ability in the last couple of years, so go to the store and make them show you what 720P/1080i/1080P look like if this is also important to you.
- Quantum Dot Display – this feature is available on the more pricey Samsung units, namely their 8000 and 9000 series sets, although they do have two 7000 models with this technology. Quantum dot TVs provide much more color depth and richness. It is more expensive than Samsung’s standard 4K sets, but these sets were designed to compete with LG’s OLET TVs which are usually priced out of most consumer’s price range. I was in Best Buy last week and noticed a display of a lower end Samsung right next to their quantum dot 9000 set and the difference was remarkable. I asked the salesperson to show me the settings and they were both set to the TV’s default. Sometimes I am just skeptical. If you can afford the new newest and best technology, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
- Samsung Drawbacks
In 2015 Samsung created a new OS for their apps, but also reduced their offerings leaving some customers less impressed. Viewing angles are also not a strength, although many manufacturers fail at this, Samsung seems to trail among the main name brands. The soap opera effect (where movies can look a little like your camcorder recordings or the quality of a soap opera show) is something I noticed first hand on my mom’s set, but she was OK with it, so I didn’t try to turn that feature off or reduce the effect. Standard definition suffers a little, but most content is at least lower quality HD now.
There are deals that are available now, but most others go live November 20th (scroll down to see all deals). Savings are off of MSRP, but that is not what stores were selling these for just prior to the Black Friday event, so it is not a true discount off of the street price.
