Angie’s List Deals – A Hidden Gem
|You may know Angie’s List for its service provider listings and reviews. Which is exactly why I subscribed to Angie’s List many years ago, and remain a member to this day.
To be honest, calling me handy would be akin to calling me the Queen of Sheba. Not even close to accurate.
Which means, any time I have an issue with my house more substantial than tightening a screw or changing a light bulb, I’m looking for someone with more experience and ability than I to handle the task.
And Angie’s List has been great at pointing me toward service providers that do quality work and don’t take advantage.
But there’s another side to Angie’s List of which many may not be aware.
Angie’s List Deals
At any given time, Angie’s List has a number of service provider deals listed for purchase. Some of which provide really good savings.
Let’s take a look at one I purchased myself last summer.
I was looking for a heating/air conditioning provider to do an annual check-up on my air conditioner. I was used to paying roughly $70 for a furnace or air conditioner check-up, and was hoping to find a new provider in that price range.
It just so happened, as I was scanning the reviews of HVAC providers, I came across an Angie’s List Deal for $79 that included not only the air conditioner check-up, but a furnace check-up for later use. At that price, it was basically a two-for-one deal.
Needless to say I jumped on it, and was happy with the two check-ups I received for only $79!
A Wide Variety of Offers
A quick scan of current Angie’s List Deals shows a variety of offers just waiting for purchase. A few include:
- $99 Carpet Cleaning and Stain Protection or Deodorizing for Four Areas
- $65 for a Heating, Cooling or Plumbing Service Call Plus One Hour Labor
- $129 for Two Hours of Electrical Labor
- $3,495 for a New Complete High Efficiency HVAC Package (furnace and air conditioner) Installed
- $100 for a Professionally Written Resume
Obviously, Angie’s List Deals are location dependent. I provide the above as an example of what’s generally offered. Some deals are okay, while others are really good.
Easy to Purchase and Credit Cards Too
Depending on the service provider, sometimes cash or check is all they’ll take for payment. The nice thing about Angie’s List Deals is that you purchase them from the Angie’s List website, using a credit card for payment.
And if you’ve read any of my Miles and Points articles, you know I like using credit cards for every purchase I can in order to accumulate the most airline miles and/or hotel points as possible.
Once a deal is selected, you’re taken to a typical purchase page where you input your credit card information – or you can use PayPal to check out – and place your order.
Some offers allow you to then schedule the service via Angie’s List’s website. Others have you call the provider directly at which time you tell them you purchased an Angie’s List Deal which you’d like to redeem.
The provider will usually ask for the Deal number, and will also request that you provide the printed version when service is completed.
And as long as no additional service is rendered at the service call, no additional payment is needed.
Deals Available to Angie’s List Subscribers Only
To take advantage of Angie’s List Deals, you must be an Angie’s List subscriber.
Angie’s List membership rates tend to vary by location. Basic membership rates are usually in the $10-$20 per year range. Which, if you get a deal like I did for my HVAC check-ups, more than pays for that annual membership fee.
There are higher priced membership plans that provide additional access to support and review categories, as well as rebates on Deal purchases. Only you can decide if the increased membership fees would be worth it for your specific situation.
Wrap Up
For a while, I didn’t pay any attention to the Deals section on Angie’s List. I had specific providers with whom I worked, and didn’t feel it necessary to look at others.
That changed when I started looking more closely at what kinds of savings I could get by taking advantage of the offered deals.
And moving to a different city, with untested providers, helped that along.
Overall, I’ve found Angie’s List a worthwhile expense, especially when factoring in the Deals opportunities the site makes available.
For roughly $20 a year, you might want to break out of your well-worn service provider path as well and give some of the Deals a try. You never know how much you might save.
