A Trip to the Red Rocks of Sedona and the Blistering Heat of Phoenix

A Sedona and Phoenix Trip on Miles and Points

Normally my wife and I like to plan out our trips more than a few days in advance. This trip was an exception.

We’d been wanting to visit Sedona for a number of years, but just hadn’t been able to plug it into the travel destination rotation.  Too many places to see and a strong affinity for the ocean kept us from pulling the trigger on a Sedona trip.

Until this past week.

We were debating a number of destinations for our last-minute summer getaway until we finally said, “Why not Sedona?”

And with no good reason against it, we started looking at Miles and Points options that would make our air travel to Arizona practically free and hotel stays completely free.

With a little effort…ok, maybe a little more than a little…we were able to find reasonably priced award availability on Southwest Airlines for the flights to and from Arizona, and award accommodations in both Sedona and Phoenix using Ultimate Rewards points for the Sedona stay and Hyatt points for Phoenix.

Added to the mix, I’d been wanting to give Silvercar, a car rental operation with limited locations throughout the U.S., a try, but had not been to a destination in which they operated until now.  So, even though we could have used points for a free or reduced cost car rental, we booked our rental through Silvercar to see how they compare to your typical car rental agency.

And, of course, who goes to Sedona and doesn’t take a Pink Jeep Tour?! We just had to jump on board one of those pink Jeeps and see the Red Rocks from an up-close vantage point only a sturdily reinforced Jeep can provide.

Overall, it was a great trip…albeit a hot one…that we’re both glad we finally got around to taking.

The details of booking the trip and our experiences once there are too much to fit into one post, so check back over the next week or so as I publish posts highlighting specific aspects of our Sedona/Phoenix excursion and how we were able to cut our travel costs significantly by using Miles and Points.
