The Chase Pay 10x Ultimate Rewards Points or 10% Cash Back at Best Buy Promo is Back
|Update: It appears the Chase Freedom credit card is the only Ultimate Rewards earning card that can take advantage of this promo. Additionally, the $400 $300 promo spend limit will count against the Freedom’s quarterly $1,500 spending cap. Will update if future reports indicate otherwise.
Update 2: It’s almost as if Chase didn’t think this promo all the way through before going public. Now the Chase Pay/Best Buy promo’s spend limit is $300 rather than the initially reported $400. And there are reports that all Ultimate Rewards earning cardholders are receiving emails regarding this offer. If you hold an Ultimate Rewards earning card other than the Freedom, I guess it’s worth a try.
In a number of posts late last year I commented that we’d likely see more and more mobile wallet promotions as banks hype this “new” way to pay.
Sure enough, here comes Chase with another Chase Pay promotion less than a month since the previous Chase Pay/Best Buy bonus ended.
Best Buy Promo
You can get 10x Ultimate Rewards points, or 10% cash back, at Best Buy when using Chase Pay to make purchases on up to $400 $300 in merchandise.
Which means, if you max this deal out, you could earn 4,000 3,000 Ultimate Rewards points or $40 $30 cash back.
Obviously, if you’re looking at a new deal on a TV during the upcoming Super Bowl sales, or some other big-ticket item you can purchase at Best Buy, it’ll be easy to max out this promotion.
But, if you don’t have plans to buy any merchandise Best Buy offers, you can still take advantage of this deal by purchasing 3rd party gift cards from Best Buy. Some of the gift cards your local Best Buy store may stock include- Starbucks, eBay, AMC Theaters, Netflix, and Southwest Airlines to name just a few. Buy gift cards of retailers you’re planning on purchasing from anyway and earn the extra Ultimate Rewards points or cash back in the process.
The Chase Pay/Best Buy promotion runs now through February 4, 2018.
*The bonus points/cash back are only earned on purchases made in-store using the Chase Pay App to pay at the register.*
You’ll have to download the Chase Pay App and use the App (QR code) to pay at the Best Buy register in-store.

Credit Cards
The promotion language that’s currently available only mentions the Chase Freedom credit card as the card available for the 10x Ultimate Rewards points/10% cash back. However, in all previous Chase Pay promotions, all Ultimate Rewards earning cards earned the extra points/cash back.
Until more information is released – via Chase or individual reports – the Freedom card is the “official” earner for this promo. But be ready to take advantage with any UR earning cards.
Ultimate Rewards earning cards include:
- Freedom Unlimited
- Freedom
- Sapphire
- Sapphire Preferred
- Sapphire Reserve
And, previous promotions have been per card, so if you have multiple Chase UR earning cards, you can really make out like a bandit!
Chase Pay
Yes, this promotion does involve a little effort in that you must use Chase Pay to make your payment. If you’re not familiar with Chase Pay, you can find more info here.
Account set up is fairly simple, just download the Chase Pay app to your smartphone and follow the prompts. Or you can log in to your Chase Ultimate Rewards earning credit card account and under the Pay & Transfer dropdown link at the top of the page you’ll see a link for Chase Pay. Select it and you can quickly set up and activate your Chase Pay account.
Obviously, for this promo, you’ll then have to download the Chase Pay App anyway. But, it might be easier to set up the Chase Pay account on a tablet/desktop. Your call.
Then, going forward, you’ll just have to enter your Chase account log in info when you pay with Chase Pay.
Wrap Up
The fact that you have to use the Chase Pay app on your smartphone to pay in-store at Best Buy is a bit of a hassle. I like the ease of online shopping and payment. But, to earn a sizable amount of Ultimate Rewards points or cash back, I just might put in the effort.
And, keep in mind the Chase Freedom card is currently offering 5x UR points/5% cash back on mobile wallet payments as one of its quarterly bonus categories. Likely you won’t be able to stack this deal – effectively giving you 15x points or 15% cash back – but any Chase Pay/Best Buy purchases using the Freedom card shouldn’t count against the Freedom’s $1,500 quarterly max spend. Reports indicate it does count against the cap.
As I’ve said before, we’ll probably see more and more of these mobile wallet payment promotions going forward…which is great, since they’re an easy way to grab large amounts of UR points or a nice bit of cash back.
