The Chase Freedom 2022 Third Quarter Bonus Categories are Gas Stations, Car Rental Agencies, Movie Theaters and Select Live Entertainment
|The 2022 third quarter bonus categories for the Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex credit cards are out and points/cash back earning for spend on those categories can be activated beginning today, June 15, 2022.
Bonus Categories
Freedoms’ third-quarter bonus categories include:
- Gas Stations
- Car Rental Agencies
- Movie Theaters
- Select Live Entertainment
All purchases made in these categories will earn 5% cash back – or my favorite, 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent – on up to $1,500 in combined purchases.
Bonus earnings in the bonus categories will begin July 1, 2022, and run through September 30, 2022.
You can activate the third-quarter categories here.
How to Play This Quarter
Gas Stations
If you’re like the vast majority of Americans who drive a gasoline-powered vehicle, you very well may be able to max out this quarter’s $1,500 spend limit with the gas station category alone.
With gas prices at historical highs, anyone who drives any amount is spending much more of their monthly budget on gasoline.
Be sure to use your Chase Freedom or Freedom Flex card to benefit yourself by saving 5% on those fillups, or earning 5x Ultimate Rewards points if that’s your preference.
If you don’t purchase gasoline in amounts that would max out this quarter’s spend maximum, gas stations that are associated with grocery stores often sell gift cards to those grocery stores. Use your Freedom card to purchase that store’s grocery gift cards in a gas station’s retail market and you can earn 5%/5x on your grocery spend, too.
With sky-high grocery prices these days, those two options, for most Americans, should easily max out the $1,500 spend for July – September.
Car Rental Agencies
The car rental agency category is pretty straight forward, with no options to “play” the category.
If you’re renting a car for summer travel, use your Freedom/Freedom Flex card to pay and you’ll earn 5% back on the rental price.
One caution, if you have a credit card that provides better rental car coverage, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, then it might be better to forego the bonus cash back/points and put the rental on a card that will provide more protection should your rental incur damage of some sort.
Movie Theaters/Select Live Entertainment
I’ll lump these two categories together since they’re not really “playable” either.
If you’ll be heading to the movies, or to see a live show, use your Freedom card to pay and earn bonus cash back/points on the purchase.
The only way I see this being a big earning is if you’re a ticket reseller who’ll be buying $1,500 worth of tickets in the coming three months. That’s not most cardholders, though.

The Chase Freedom Flex Credit Card
The Chase Freedom Flex credit card is a great way to earn Ultimate Rewards points which can, ultimately, be used to travel for free.
Or, if cash back is your thing, it really couldn’t get any easier to earn 5% cash back. Just use your Freedom card in the quarterly bonus categories and bam! some easy cash back.
If you don’t have a Freedom Flex card, you can use our referral link below to learn more about the card and how it can earn you cash back/Ultimate Rewards points each month.
And, currently, new applicants can earn 5% cash back on gas station purchases on up to $6,000 of spend in the first year after application approval.
With gas prices at sky-high levels, this offer combined with other suggestions we’ve published, can help offset these crazy gasoline prices – at least somewhat.
Plus, you can earn a $200 bonus after you spend $500 on the card in the first 3 months from card approval. Not a bad savings rate.

Wrap Up
We’re all trying to save money these days thanks to increased costs on just about everything.
While a 5% savings won’t completely offset the price increases we’re having to pay, it will help take the sting out a little bit.
And all you have to do is use the Freedom/Freedom Flex card for your everyday spend after activating the bonus categories for a specific quarter.
