Redbox+ Subscription Plans May Be Something Movie Lovers Want to Consider

Redbox, the movie rental operation best known for its big, red boxes stationed outside of grocery stores, drug stores, etc., is introducing two movie rental subscription plans that movie lovers may want to consider.

Obviously, with the proliferation of movie streaming options from your own living room – a service Redbox also offers – Redbox is likely trying to stem a move away from rentals from its Redbox kiosks.

To do this, they’ve introduced two subscription plans that provide monthly free rentals as well as extended return times on Redbox rentals.

Before we hit the details associated with each plan, this is for actual DVD, Blu-Ray or 4K UHD disc rentals from a Redbox kiosk only. The subscription plans do not include Redbox’s streaming rentals.

Now on to the plans’ details.

The Redbox+ $9.99 per Year Plan

  • Enjoy up to 12 free 1-night rentals (one per month) from eligible movies rented from a kiosk.
  • Keep rented discs until midnight local time for no extra charge (an extra 3 hours longer than the regular return time).

The Redbox+ $19.99 per Year Plan

  • Enjoy up to 24 free 1-night rentals from eligible movies rented from a kiosk. There is no monthly limit associated with this plan.
  • Keep rented discs until midnight local time for no extra charge (an extra 3 hours longer than the regular return time).
  • If you pay for an extra night’s rental, you’ll receive a free 1-night rental to use on a future visit. This free-movie-benefit is limited to one per month.

For both subscription plans, a Redbox account is required. An account is free to set up and provides points for paid rentals that can be redeemed for free rentals. You can sign up for a Redbox account at this link.

Our Thoughts

If you’re someone who rents movies somewhat regularly from Redbox kiosks, this is probably a good deal.

A DVD rental via a Redbox kiosk is $1.85.

A Blu-ray rental is $2.00.

That’s if you don’t have a promo code discount, of course.

When considering the $9.99 per year plan, you’re well ahead of the game with each month’s free rental whether you choose DVDs or Blu-rays.

And the same can definitely be said about the $19.99 per year plan.

As long as you actually take full advantage of the free movies, that is.

Another point to consider…the free movies associated with Redbox+ are, according to Redbox, “…refreshed each month – and are generally new releases within the past four weeks.” They may not, however, be the absolute latest new releases.

You can check out the current Redbox+ eligible movie list at this link.

So you have to be honest with yourself. Are you okay with your free movie choices potentially not being the newest releases, and, will you take the time to go to the kiosk and “rent” your free movie 12 times or 24 times, keeping in mind the stipulations associated (primarily with the $9.99 plan) with each plan?

For some, the answer will be a definite yes. In which case, these plans are something to consider.

For those who don’t answer yes without hesitation…well, maybe just stick with rentals when you want them, using promo codes to lower your per night rental to pretty cheap when they’re available.

No matter which category you fall into, you should open a Redbox account just to earn points on your rentals and receive the occasional discount codes.

What do you think? Is Redbox+ something you’ll join?
