The Hilton Honors Surpass Card from American Express is offering its highest sign-up bonus ever!
Sign up for the Hilton Amex Surpass card now through May 31, 2017, and you’ll earn 100,000 Hilton Honors points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months.
Additionally, and this is not something you’ll normally see with a Hilton card, you’ll receive a free weekend night award after your first anniversary of card membership.
The annual fee for the Hilton Amex Surpass is $75, and is not waived the first year of card membership.
And, you’ll likely need to pay the $75 annual fee for the second year of holding the card to get the free weekend night.
Will you be able to get at least $150 of value out of the free weekend night certificate? Probably. It all depends on the hotel at which you choose to use it.
Another positive of carrying this card – if you’re a Hilton fan, that is – is its ongoing earning power of Hilton Honors points.
When you use the Hilton Amex Surpass card to pay, you’ll earn:
- 12 Hilton Honors points per dollar spent at Hilton Portfolio hotels and resorts
- 6 Hilton Honors points per dollar spent at restaurants, U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations
- 3 Hilton Honors points per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases
You also get complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status – potential room upgrades, 25% bonus points on paid stays, 5th night free option with points or paid stays, and free breakfast at participating properties – which is a nice perk, especially if Hilton is your primary hotel chain.
What Will 100,000 Hilton Points Get You?
While 100,000 points sounds like a lot, in actuality, it’s not. Especially if your goal is to stay at an above average property.
Here’s a quick look at a few Hilton hotels and what you’d get for the 100,000 points.
One thing to remember about Hilton’s award program, unlike other hotels’ loyalty programs, they do not have a set award amount for a specific category of hotel. Rather, the amount of points needed for a specific room-night will vary depending on date, property occupancy, etc. Below is an example of that variability.

As you can see, for a 1-night reservation at this property, the amount of points needed ranges from 65,000 to 87,000 depending on the date selected.
So, for the examples I’m giving, award night prices (in points) are a point in time example, and will change – both up and down – depending on a variety of factors.
The Hampton Inn Orlando/Lake Buena Vista
25,000 Hilton Honors points per night the third week of June 2017.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Austin Central
32,000 Hilton Honors points per night the second week of September 2017
Hilton Chicago

Add to Your Hilton Honors Balance
Of course, you can add to your balance of Hilton points fairly easily.
The Amex Hilton Surpass with its multiple points per dollar bonus spend categories can rack up the points just by using it for groceries, dining out and for filling up at the gas station.
You can also apply for other Hilton credit cards and get those sign-up bonuses as well.
Right now, the Citi Hilton Visa Signature card is offering a 75,000 Hilton Honors Points sign-up bonus after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months.
If you were to apply for both the Citi Hilton card and the Hilton Amex Surpass card and meet both minimum spends using non-bonused spending categories, you’d have approximately 188,000 Hilton points. More if you used bonus categories when meeting the minimum spends.
Not a bad haul of Hilton points for only two credit card sign-ups.
