Grab Some Easy Delta SkyMiles with These Increased Bonuses

In a recent post, “Las Vegas, Bellagio, and the Flu All Thanks to Miles and Points,” I wrote how my wife and I used Delta SkyMiles to fly for free – aside from the mandatory taxes/fees – to Las Vegas.

I also mentioned how the miles used were the result of an American Express Gold Delta credit card sign-up bonus. A 60,000 SkyMile sign-up bonus to be exact. And I related how the current sign-up bonus was 30,000 SkyMiles on the Gold Delta card and you may want to wait for the sign-up bonus to increase before applying.

Well, the increased bonuses are here.

Both the Gold Delta SkyMiles credit card and the Platinum Delta SkyMiles credit card have increased sign-up bonuses now through April 11, 2018.

Gold Delta SkyMiles Card

The Gold Delta SkyMiles Card has a 60,000 SkyMiles sign-up bonus. 50,000 of which is earned after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months of card membership, and the remaining 10,000 after an additional $1,000 is spent in the first 6 months of card membership.

You also get a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase in the first 3 months. If you won’t be flying Delta in those first 3 months, you can go to Delta.com, purchase a $50 Delta gift card that you can use toward airfare at a future date, and that will trigger the $50 credit, essentially giving you $50 free.

The Gold Delta card’s annual fee is waived the first year, and will be $95 each year after…if you keep it open, that is.

We get a SkyMiles referral bonus if you use the link below to apply – and get approved – for the Gold Delta card. Of course, you don’t have to use our link, but we appreciate when you do.

Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card has a 70,000 SkyMiles sign-up bonus and a 10,000 MQM bonus. Both the 70,000 SkyMiles and the 10,000 MQMs are earned after spending $3,000 within the first 3 months of card membership.

You also get a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase within the first 3 months of card membership. As mentioned with the Gold Delta card, if you won’t be flying Delta in the first three months, you can purchase Delta gift cards to trigger the statement credit.

The Platinum Delta card’s annual fee is $195, and is not waived the first year.

The Platinum Delta card is geared toward frequent Delta flyers, thus the 10,000 MQM bonus in addition to the redeemable 70,000 SkyMiles. One nice benefit of this card is the Domestic Main Cabin round-trip companion certificate you earn each year upon renewal of your Card.

You can read more about the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card and apply at the link below. We do not receive a referral bonus for the Platinum Delta card.

Benefits

All Delta credit cards provide first checked bag free benefit for the cardholder and up to nine additional passengers traveling on the same reservation.

Delta cards earn 2 SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta flights, and 1 SkyMile per dollar spent on all other purchases.

And, since the Delta cards are issued by American Express, you’ll get access to the potentially valuable Amex Offers that all American Express cardholders enjoy.

Important

American Express has one of the most stringent sign-up bonus restrictions in the credit card industry.

If you have ever received a sign-up bonus for a specific American Express credit card in the past, you will not receive a sign-up bonus for that specific card again.

So, if you’ve gotten a sign-up bonus for either the Gold Delta or Platinum Delta cards in the past, don’t bother applying if earning the sign-up bonus is your goal.

There have been recent reports that 7 years is the cutoff (if you received a sign-up bonus more than 7 years ago, you could get the sign-up bonus now) but that’s not confirmed. Gamble if you want.

One other option: Both the Gold Delta and Platinum Delta cards each have business credit card versions for which you can apply and receive the sign-up bonus.  If you have a business – even selling things on eBay, or a small side business – you possibly could get approved for the business version of either card.  Just something to consider.

Wrap up

With any credit card, but especially American Express credit cards, you want to grab the largest sign-up bonus possible.

While the Gold Delta card has seen a larger sign-up bonus in the past – 75,000 SkyMiles if I remember correctly – the 60,000 mile bonus is pretty good.

And the Platinum Delta card is currently at its highest sign-up bonus.

So if you’re in the market for some Delta SkyMiles, now just might be the time to pull the application trigger.
