Chase Provides Details on the New Freedom Unlimited Credit Card

Well, that didn’t take long.

In yesterday’s post, The Chase Freedom Credit Card Is Changing, I discussed the new cash back credit card that Chase was reportedly getting ready to debut.

The brochure shown in Angelina Travels’ post for the Chase Freedom Unlimited card touted its 1.5% cash back earning on all purchases, as well as the typical sign-up bonus details and associated benefits.

What was not mentioned was whether this new card would earn Ultimate Rewards points, or simply have cash back as its earning option.

Additionally, there was no mention from “those-in-the-know” whether the Freedom Unlimited was a replacement for the current Freedom card, or if there would now be a Freedom and a Freedom Unlimited card in Chase’s arsenal.

It didn’t take Chase long to lay the rumors surrounding this new card to rest.

In an interview with Reuters, and a post from the blog The Points Guy, it’s been confirmed that:

  • The Freedom Unlimited will earn the extremely versatile and valuable Ultimate Rewards points, and allow those points to be transferred to travel partners as longs as a premium Ultimate Rewards earning Chase card is held as well.
  • The Freedom Unlimited will be in addition to the Chase Freedom card. Which means, for those who value earning 5 points per dollar on the quarterly bonus categories, you can now breath a sigh of relief.

And, in the Reuter’s article, Pamela Codispoti, president of Chase Consumer Branded Cards even teased Miles and Points enthusiasts with this comment, “…the Freedom Unlimited card will (sic) available as an alternative, or a companion, to Chase’s current Freedom card…”

A companion? It’s almost as if Chase is enticingly dangling the opportunity to get both the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited before those of us who love points. Too bad they’ve already instituted the 5/24 rule on Ultimate Rewards earning cards. Oh Chase, you’re such a tease.

At least we now have some definitive information on the new Freedom Unlimited card. And, for the most part, the news is good.

Will you be applying for the Chase Freedom Unlimited when the offers go live?
