Apple Pay
Not familiar with Apple Pay? It’s just one of the many mobile wallet payment systems now available. Apple Pay is exclusive to Apple devices – iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac – so you’ll need one of these devices to set up your Apple Pay account.
You can get set up details here.
Adding a payment method – credit or debit cards – is the main focus since that will be how Apple Pay payments are processed.
While Apple Pay can be used in-store, using your Apple smartphone/watch to pay at participating retailers, the above deals are for Apple Pay payments made online, at a retailer’s website, or via a retailer’s app.
To do so, simply look for the Apple Pay button, click it, login to your Apple Pay account, select the payment method within Apple Pay you want to use and pay for your purchase.
The process can be confusing the first few times…as any of these mobile wallet systems can be…however once you get the hang of it, using Apple Pay, or any mobile wallet system is a snap. And you can take advantage of deals like these.
Stacking the Apple Pay Deals
There are reports that Chase is incentivizing the use of some of its credit cards by offering extra points per dollar on purchases made with Apple Pay. All you’d need to do is load one of your Chase credit cards – usually, the Ultimate Rewards earning cards are the ones targeted for bonuses – into Apple Pay and use it as your payment method for Apple Pay purchases.
Chase cardholders who’ve been targeted for the Apple Pay promotion have received emails to that effect. So check your email/Spam folder for this Chase promo offer.
Update: It appears the increased Chase Ultimate Rewards points/cash back earning is not targeted. Holders of the Chase Freedom Unlimited, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Amazon credit cards will earn an extra 1 point or 1% cash back over and above your card’s normal earning rate now through December 31, 2018, when you use one of those cards in Apple Pay (or Google Pay) to make your purchases. The bonus earning rate is automatic, no registration seems to be required. Just add one of those cards to Apple Pay (or Google Pay) and use the mobile wallet to make your purchase.
You can also stack this Apple Pay promotion with Amex Offers.
Here are a few Amex Offers that you may have available on your American Express card(s):
Pier 1 Imports – Spend $75 or more and get $15 back
Saks Fifth Avenue – Spend $250 or more and get $50 back
Boxed – Spend $75 or more and get $20 back
To take advantage of these, and potentially other, Amex Offers in addition to the Apple Pay deals in this post, you’d simply add the American Express credit card on which these Amex Offers are loaded into Apple Pay and use that card – via Apple Pay – to pay at the retailer offering the Amex Offer.
Wrap Up
Some of the Apple Pay deals are okay, while others are “meh.” And the retailers are definitely a mixed bag. There are more than a few that I’ve never even heard of. But, that’s part of the reason behind these promotions, small, little-known retailers getting visibility by teaming with Apple Pay to offer some kind of deal.
There are a few bigger-name retailers with some decent savings opportunities, though.
And, as illustrated above, you can sweeten the Apple Pay deals by stacking with other promotions – Chase bonus points or Amex Offers – to make out even better.
