Tax Filing Deadline of July 15, 2020 Stands
|The U.S. Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service announced yesterday that the July 15, 2020, tax filing deadline would stand.
There had been discussion within the Trump administration of extending the filing deadline again to provide filers additional time to organize and submit tax documents in light of the coronavirus shutdowns.
An additional extension of the filing date is no longer under consideration.
Which means, if you have not yet filed your 2019 taxes, you have roughly two weeks to do so.
And while the announcement is for federal tax filings, it is almost certain this July 15 deadline applies to all state and local tax filings as well.
At this point, it is likely only those who owe Uncle Sam money, rather than those receiving a refund, have yet to file.
If for some reason you cannot meet the already extended July 15 filing deadline, you can request an extension to October 15, 2020.
However, this does not mean you can forego paying money owed until mid October.
Money owed and not paid to the federal government by July 15, 2020, will be assessed penalties and interest until paid in full.
For those owing money, it was nice to get that extra 90-days to hold the funds. Now that’s over, it’s time to give the government its share.
