Maximizing the 1800Flowers Amex Offer Even if You Don’t Like Flowers

We’ve written a number of posts regarding 1800Flowers since Savings Beagle opened its virtual doors.

No, we’re not big fans of flower arrangements.  And no, we don’t regularly get in hot water with our wives or girlfriends necessitating the ordering of large, apologetic bouquets at the best price possible.

It just so happens, that for the longest time, purchases at 1800Flowers, or one of its affiliated retailers, was a great way to maximize your Miles and Points earning at a very reasonable price-point.

Unfortunately, the door has closed on many of the homerun earning opportunities of old.

But, that doesn’t mean you still can’t get a pretty good deal on items that can be given as gifts, or used for yourself, by maximizing the savings/points earning opportunities that still exist.

Below I’ll run through one deal as an example.  The techniques I’ll show are not limited to the item, or even retailer, I’m going to highlight.  These saving/earning plays can be used across the 1800Flowers retail family.

1800Flowers Retail Family

First and foremost, if you don’t know this already, 1800Flowers refers to a whole host of retailers offering goods from cookies, to popcorn, to fruit bouquets, to a wide variety to meats just to name a few.

Deals can be had on many different items.  And even the pickiest of individuals should be able to find something of interest from the retailers below.

Here’s a list of the current retailers that fall under the 1800Flowers umbrella.  Click each to see what they offer.

Now that you know 1800Flowers does not mean just flowers, we can get on to how to maximize your 1800Flowers purchase.

The Savings Plays

Since we’re still in grilling season, with tailgate season just around the corner, I thought I’d pick The Tailgate Collection from Stock Yards for my money saving/points earning example.

Now doesn’t that get your mouth watering?  And not a flower in sight!

The Tailgate Collection is priced at $119.99 on Stock Yards.  If you’re interested in what exactly comes with The Tailgate Collection, you can read the details here.

That, however, really isn’t the purpose of this post – we’re more interested in how much we can knock off that $119.99 price.  Since, to me, that’s just a tad pricey for my taste.

1800Flowers Amex Offer

We start by adding the 1800Flowers Amex Offer to the American Express credit card on which it’s offered.

As you can see, if you spend $50 or more at 1800Flowers (or any of its affiliated retailers), you’ll automatically get a $15 statement credit.

So, just by adding the Amex Offer to the American Express card, and using that credit card to pay, the effective price drops to $104.99.

That’s the easy part, now we need to hunt out other money saving or points earning opportunities.

Cash Back and Points Earning Sites

You could always check the various cash back and points earning sites individually, but that’s a bit of effort.

Luckily, there are a few sites that aggregate that information for you.

Cash Back Monitor

evreward

I use both sites to check current cash back/miles and points offerings at the retailers from which I’m planning to buy.

One caveat, though, neither site is 100% guaranteed to give you up-to-the-minute numbers.  Use them as a guide, and then double check the actual site you want to purchase through for the exact numbers.

Let’s see what evreward is currently showing for 1800flowers.

And Cash Back Monitor.

As you can see, Cash Back Monitor shows a larger selection, especially when looking at the cash back options.

Of course, to earn cash back or airline miles…or any other rewards points, you’ll need to have an existing account into which your earned cash back or points can be deposited.  That process is beyond the scope of this post, just know you’ll need an open account to accrue whichever reward you choose.

And, if you’re not a regular cash back/Miles and Points portal user, intimately familiar with the process, you must click through your desired earning portal’s 1800Flowers.com link to purchase in order to earn cash back or Miles and Points.

United Airlines would give the best return at 15 MileagePlus miles per dollar spent at 1800Flowers.  With a price of $119.99, you’d earn a cool 1,800 United miles on your Tailgate Collection purchase.

If, however, cash back is more your thing, BeFrugal is offering 18% cash back for first-time users or 15% otherwise.

I, however, prefer TopCashBack which is offering a 14% cash back rate.

My reasoning?  I’ve had good experience with TopCashBack, and no experience with BeFrugal.  Simple as that.

So, if you went with TopCashBack’s rate of 14%, you’d effectively save an additional $16.80.

Or, you could use the AAA or Visa 20% discount code and automatically save $24 off your purchase price.  I like that option best for saving cash.

Note: If you’re using a cash back site such as TopCashBack or similar, you won’t get your cash back right away.  Typically those sites don’t register your earned cash back for a week or two after your purchase, and then you’ll need to wait for the quarterly payout period to hit before you get access to the cash.  So, it could be up to 14 weeks before you actually get your hands on the cash from a cash back site.  Which is why I’d opt for the 20% discount code if it’s available.

The Total Tally

I just can’t wait for those hamburgers, hot dogs and ribs to arrive…that’s a real cookout feast to be sure.

But it’s also a real pocketbook buster at the $119.99 price.

Luckily, with a little effort, we can drop that price just a bit.

We start by using the Amex Offer that saves $15 via a statement credit.

Then we choose the 20% discount code that saves another $24.  We have to be careful coupling discount codes with Amex Offers, though.

Amex Offers are triggered when a specific spend amount is hit…in this case $50.

If your discount code…which reduces the actual purchase price…drops the amount charged to your American Express card below that minimum spend amount, you won’t get the Amex Offer deal.

Luckily, that’s not a problem in this case.

So, $119.99 – $24 = $95.99.  Then subtract the Amex Offer $15 from $95.99 to get your final price of $80.99.

A total savings of $39!  Not bad at all.

Of course, shipping will be extra, especially for a non-cooked food item like this.

However, there are many items from the various retailers under the 1800Flowers umbrella that receive FREE shipping via a ShopRunner membership.  Conveniently, most American Express credit cards provide a FREE ShopRunner membership to cardholders.

If you’re using an Amex Offer to save on a 1800Flowers purchase, you most likely have free shipping via ShopRunner and your American Express credit card.

Haven’t yet set up your complimentary ShopRunner membership on your American Express card?  It’s easy to do, simply log in to your Amex account, select the “Benefits” link and look for the ShopRunner benefit description through which you can set up your membership.

Don’t Yet Have an American Express Card?

If you don’t have an American Express credit card, read our post “The Best American Express Cards for Accessing Amex Offers” for some suggestions.

Even if the card won’t be your go-to credit card for every day spend, an Amex card is great to have for the benefits it offers, and especially, the money-saving Amex Offers you can take advantage of.

Wrap Up

There you have it, a rundown on how to maximize you money-saving, or points-earning, with the 1800Flowers Amex Offer.

Usually, the 1800Flowers Amex Offer will come around at least a few times each year, making it a great opportunity to stack deals to save on gift giving or on a special treat just for yourself.

With such a large selection of items from which to pick, the only downside is narrowing the purchase options to a semi-reasonable amount.

Do you have any favorite items from the 1800Flowers retail family that you’d recommend when taking advantage of the savings opportunities?
