Free 1-year AARP Membership with a $15 Walgreens Purchase
|Update: It looks as though AARP and Walgreens are continuing this promotion in 2021! We’ve updated links to the current AARP activation page which can be found in the post below.
Walgreens is offering a free 1-year AARP membership when $15 in select Walgreens brand health & wellness, beauty or personal care products are purchased in a single transaction.
This promotion runs now through August 31, 2018.
If you’re already an AARP member, don’t worry, you can benefit too.
Current AARP members who meet the purchase requirement will receive a free 1-year extension to your existing membership.
An AARP Membership at My Age?
Unless you’re “of a certain age,” you may be saying who cares about an AARP membership.
As we pointed out in a post titled “AARP Savings No Matter Your Age,” there are some money-saving opportunities for individuals of any age when you join AARP.
Yes, you read that right, anyone, of any age, can join AARP and take advantage of many of the savings opportunities that are offered.
You can read the linked post above for details, but a quick rundown of savings include:
- 10-15% off at select restaurants
- Shopping discounts at various retailers
- Discounts on a variety of travel-related purchases, including British Airways airfares
It’s an Associate Membership that opens the AARP savings door to anyone, and for just $12.50 per year, it’s hard to beat.
But Walgreens has beat it with its FREE AARP membership deal.
As long as you can find $15 of select Walgreens items you will actually use, that is. Which shouldn’t be too difficult.
The Fine Print
As with any deal, you’ve got to read and follow the fine print.
It appears the receipt you receive after making a qualifying purchase will include information for redeeming your free AARP membership.
So DON’T throw the Walgreens receipt away!
An Added Bonus
If you have a Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card, or recently applied for the new Chase Freedom Flex credit card, you’ll now earn 3% cash back on all your drugstore purchases.
If you have the old Chase Freedom credit card, you can call the toll free number on the back of your Freedom card to change it to the new Freedom Flex or Freedom Unlimited to start earning the 3% cash back on drugstore purchases.
If you’re interested, you can read more at our post “Chase Revamping Freedom Unlimited and Introducing Freedom Flex Card.”
Wrap Up
Walgreens is offering a free 1-year AARP membership with a qualifying $15 purchase now through August 31, 2018. Still going on in September of 2020.
Purchases at Walgreens and Duane Reade locations nationwide qualify for this promotion.
And, better yet, you don’t have to be a retired person to take advantage of the money-saving deals an AARP membership has to offer.
All you have to do is grab this deal and start saving.
Have the receipt for a free 1 year membership for AARP with the code on the bottom Tryed to fill out form on computer several times would not except the info ,called the number on the form and the lady said she could not eacept the offer over the phone . Whats up with that Thank you
James,
That’s strange and unfortunate. Haven’t heard of any other cases where individuals with a code couldn’t get it to work at the redemption link/page. Maybe the code Walgreens printed was faulty? I doubt a Walgreens employee at the store could help, but maybe a manager? Since AARP won’t accept the code over the phone, unfortunately, not much else you can do.
Any readers have other suggestions?
Have a coupon from walgreens but have not been able to activate it
Elizabeth,
Thanks for your comment.
I’m not sure what you mean by coupon. Typically, you’ll receive the free AARP membership via the Walgreen’s receipt on which you met the purchase requirements. There should be a code on that receipt that you’ll enter on the Walgreen’s/AARP promotion redemption page (link below). You should be able to enter that code, and after a few more confirmation/activation steps – likely your name, address, etc. – you’ll receive your free AARP membership.
Walgreen’s/AARP Free Membership Redeption Page
Hopefully, that works. This promo has been around for a few years now, and we haven’t followed its specifics lately. Maybe fellow readers can provide assistance in the comments if our suggestion doesn’t work? Thanks if you do.
thank you for the free membership
Marjorie,
Thanks for reading and your comment.
Just to be clear, Savings Beagle didn’t provide the free membership, we just wrote about it in the hopes more people could take advantage. Walgreens and AARP are the ones who provided the free membership.
Thanks again for reading. Glad you could take advantage of this deal.
I have been an AARP member since 2016 & love the AARP savings benefits, AARP magazine & Bulletin. I appreciate Walgreens offering me a free 1 year membership (renewal.)
Glad you were able to take advantage of the AARP/Walgreens deal. Every bit of money saved counts in the big picture!

Why are Walgreens giving free AARP’s membership coupons when there is no where to redeem it ?
Shane,
Thanks for reading and your comment.
I’m not sure exactly what your Walgreen’s receipt shows, but there should be a code somewhere on the receipt/AARP promo section that you will enter into the AARP/Walgreen’s promo box on the promotion’s webpage. There’s a link in the post above “Link to Deal,” or you can click here to go to the page to enter the code.
If you don’t have a code on your receipt, I’m not sure how you’d redeem for the free one-year membership. That’s probably a question for Walgreen’s.
I I I purchased 15 dollars worth of Walgreens products. I was planning to get get the free membership to AARP for the next year. The cashier was not familiar with the offer. I had the paper notification that I received when i received my flu shot last week. The form did not print out after. I was told to come back the next day, but was directed to on the internet to get the necessary information.?? I’m not finding what I need? Can you help?

Hi Beverly,
Thanks for your comment and question.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions for finding the AARP free 1-year membership form on the Internet. I wouldn’t think that would be an option considering it requires a certain purchase to trigger the printed coupon/code. The only option I could think of is that Walgreens allows its rewards members to enter receipt numbers on its website to register purchases for offered benefits. I don’t have first-hand knowledge of this, though, so it’s only a guess.
If that’s not an option, maybe send your concern via Walgreens online contact form at the following link. https://www.walgreens.com/mktg/contactus/contact-us-forms.jsp?tier3Id=1310
Or…
You didn’t mention if you talked with a manager or not…I would definitely speak with a manager, he/she should have a better idea about the AARP promotion and how to print a coupon from a previously provided receipt. Non-managerial staff likely won’t know how to do that, and, as you noted, very possibly won’t even be aware of the promotion.
It’s unfortunate that you have to do all this follow-up when it’s obviously Walgreens’ issue for not printing the coupon when you checked out. Hopefully, the online contact form or a manager will be able to provide a quick and easy resolution. Good luck.
bought 16.oo worth wargreens brand ice packs on the first day of the free aarp offer. no coupon was printed out. called catalina got a incident report and all . talked to 3 people 3 different times, i sent in the info they ask for and have emailed many times, after the first 2 emails have not responded yet. Some customer service you have. I know I bought the right items because I have bought those before and got a free membership. incident no. 02867390 in case catalina wants it???
Marry Ellen,
Thanks for your comment. Savings Beagle is in no way affiliated with AARP or Walgreens. We just publish money-saving deals and opportunities when we find them…which is what this post is.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble redeeming your Walgreens purchase for the free one-year AARP membership. I’m not sure what catalina is, but maybe a call/email/letter to the corporate offices/president of Walgreens might help? It’s one of my suggestions in the post “What to Do When DirecTV or Any Major Company is Not Addressing Your Concern.”
Hope this helps and you’re able to get your free membership.
I got a Free AARP Membership coupon today 09/19/2020 when I spent $15.00 and there is acode good until 11/11/2020 the instructions say to visitwww.AARP.org/Walgreens how do I redeem my coupon?
Jim,
Thanks for your comment and question.
You should be able to just enter the code on your receipt at the landing page for the http://www.aarp.org/Walgreens address. Then enter your personal information to connect the free one year membership to you/your AARP account. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the confirmation that the promo is still available in 2020.
I have a coupon for free AARP membership that i recieved on 9/18/ 2020. Would like to join. Recieved it at Walgeens in Wallace North Carolina.
Jerry,
Thanks for the update. I’m surprised this promo is still available in 2020. That’s good news, though. If anyone’s interested in the free AARP membership, be sure to check your Walgreen’s receipt/coupons. A membership can definitely be a money-saver for certain retailers.
I just purchased over $15 in Walgreen products. Supplements and baby aspirin. I did not get my coupon for AARP member. #10518 6707 N RIDGE RD

Nancy,
Thanks for checking out the free AARP 1-year membership post on Savings Beagle.
Unfortunately, the post you came across was from last year – 2018. As far as I’m aware, the free AARP membership with a Walgreens purchase is no longer being offered. Last year’s promotion ended August 31, 2018.
Nancy sorry but it is still an active free membership. Got my coupon and filled out online tonight. I got a year extension.
Karen,
Thanks for your comment. I’ll pass along your experience in the post.
