22 Million Americans Have Now Filed for Unemployment Benefits
Quote from Savings Beagle on April 16, 2020, 3:21 pmAnd the news doesn't get any better.
Thursday mornings are the time when unemployment claims numbers for the previous week are released, and this morning we saw that 5.2 million Americans had filed for unemployment benefits the past week.
Add that number to the previous weeks (roughly a full month now) and we've seen 22 million Americans file for unemployment.
And that's the number of people who were actually able to get through and have their claims filed. The true numbers of unemployed may be - and likely are - higher.
These are staggering numbers, the result of government-mandated lockdown and stay-at-home orders.
The federal government continues to provide a variety of financial relief measures to both individuals - employed and not - as well as businesses to keep workers from being furloughed or laid off.
If you need help, I encourage you to look at the other posts in this How's the Economy section where we cover government, and private sector, relief efforts.
Unfortunately, this crisis is far from over. The economic hits from this pandemic are just now beginning to be felt.
The federal government will need to do much more to help U.S. citizens and the U.S. economy make it through.
Right now political game-play is in action, blocking additional monies from being appropriated for the Paycheck Protection Program which was funding small businesses with - effectively - grants to keep employees on the payroll for the next 8 weeks. I say "was" because today the program ran out of money, roughly a week after it began, as a result of incredibly high demand. Additional funding is gravely needed to keep small businesses afloat and workers paid for the coming weeks. Our elected leaders in the U.S. Congress need to stop the partisan bullshit and help the American people in a very dire time.
I encourage you to watch closely our elected leaders and how they act, not what they say, during this crisis and vote accordingly when the time comes.
America- and the world for that matter - haven't seen an economic crisis of this magnitude possibly ever. Actions are needed now to help the country and its citizens. Inaction or bad choices could very well have disastrous effects for years, and possibly decades, to come.
And the news doesn't get any better.
