Congress is Battling Over America’s Latest Appropriations Bills – Use This Budget Tool to See If You Can Find a Financially Viable Solution
|Congress is approaching the deadline – September 30th at midnight – to approve legislation funding the U.S. budget’s discretionary programs.
At this point, there are enough dissenting voices to pretty much assure some sort of a shutdown due to Congress not being able to come to an agreement on funding levels for the coming fiscal year.
The reasons for dissent are many, but primarily surround the inability of lawmakers to budget in a financially responsible manner.
Considering America is $33 trillion in debt and continues to spend more than it brings in each and every year, those expressing concern do have a point.
Budgeting is not an easy process. Well, as far as the numbers go, it is an easy process. This is how much the U.S. government brings in, and this is how much it is spending…and the spending number, ideally, should be lower than or equal to how much is being brought in.
The decisions behind what funding levels to keep, which to cut and which to add to, however, are where the difficulties come into play.
And as we’ve seen for many years (decades, even), our elected officials just don’t bother trying to keep the numbers in line.
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget developed an interactive tool called The Debt Fixer.
This allows you to make decisions that our elected officials should be making as annual appropriations bills are considered.
According to the Committee’s overview of The Debt Fixer, “…you have the opportunity to choose your budgeting priorities and see if your choices will get our national debt on a sustainable trajectory. With dozens of decision points, you’ll face tough choices in areas like defense, health care, taxes, and education.”
And, most importantly, “You can even share your results with your Members of Congress.“
Which I would highly recommend.
Your elected officials need to hear what you want when it comes to the financial well-being of the U.S. And this online budgeting tool can help you do just that. As well as illustrate that we, as a country, can’t fund everything, and tough decisions do need to be made.

After reading the brief debt overview on the landing page, click the “Next” button at the bottom of the page to begin making your tough budget decisions.
And, again, once you’ve finished, use the option to send your results to your federal elected officials.
