I can’t personally vouch for Total by Verizon, but purchasing the phone from it shouldn’t be an issue.
As far as service reliability, it’s likely similar to any MVNO, or cell provider for that matter, service quality and reliability will depend on location.
Once you’ve paid for the phone and one month of service, you take the phone to any other provider you want if you’re not happy with Total by Verizon. Just keep the 60-day requirement for unlocking (typically automatic) Verizon iPhones in mind.
