Another Reason to Play the Miles and Points Game
|I started into the Miles and Points hobby as a way to save money on travel. I soon realized, not only could I get more travel for less money, but I could also travel in ways, and to destinations, I could never otherwise afford.
There are, however, some people for whom cost is no object.
High profile individuals, and especially well-known celebrities, think nothing of flying first class no matter the cost of the ticket.
When you make millions of dollars per year, what’s a $5,000+ airline ticket every month or so.
Which brings me to the “other reason to play the Miles and Points game.”
Actually, for me, this isn’t so much of a draw. And I normally don’t advocate redeeming miles for first class seats when flying within the continental U.S. You get a much better value when redeeming those miles for long-haul international business and first class tickets. But I digress.
A recent story by Johnny Jet, a travel writer and blogger, caught my attention and made me think – for some, this may be a reason to get involved with Miles and Points.
In his piece, “Want to Sit Next to A Celebrity On Your Next Flight? Sit Here!,” Johnny Jet points out that most celebrities who fly commercially, only fly first class. And typically, they choose the window seat (usually 1A) of the first row if they’re flying alone.
So, if you use your miles to book seat 1B, especially on a transcontinental (New York – Los Angeles/vice versa) flight, your odds of sitting next to a big name for the roughly 5 hour flight are not too bad.
I say the “odds” part with my tongue somewhat in cheek, of course. But it does make sense.
You should check out Johnny’s full piece – it’s an interesting read about his experiences sitting near/with celebrities on his travels, and even includes a gallery of his celebrity selfies.
My personal favorite of Johnny’s celebrity encounters? Richard Branson, by far. I would love the opportunity to talk with such a colorful and successful individual for hours on end while seated comfortably in first class. Although, I’m sure he wouldn’t be quite as enthused.
And a close second would have to be Buzz Aldrin. Now that guy would have some stories to tell.
Miles and Points can provide experiences about which many can only dream. And for some, that may include the opportunity to, literally, rub elbows with those normally only seen on a movie or TV screen.
