Get 5x Ultimate Rewards Points When You Use Chase Pay at Best Buy, eBags and Tock
|Chase is, once again, making a push to get shoppers to use Chase Pay!
While the incentive – 5x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent at Best Buy, eBags and Tock – isn’t as good as we saw last year, it’s better than the usual 1 UR point you’d normally get for purchases at these retailers.
The Promo
You can get 5x Ultimate Rewards points at Best Buy, eBags and Tock when using Chase Pay to make up to $200 total in purchases.
Which means, if you max this deal out, you could earn 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points rather than the 200 you would normally get.
No, this isn’t a whopper of a deal, but it’s better than nothing, and it’s always nice to earn extra Ultimate Rewards points when the opportunity presents itself.
eBags.com carries a wide variety of merchandise, aside from luggage, that might make finding merchandise to earn the 5x UR points on a bit easier.
Best Buy, obviously, carries a number of electronic devices that could easily hit that $200 mark.
And, for those unfamiliar, Best Buy also stocks a wide variety of gift cards – Starbucks, eBay, AMC Theaters, Netflix, Southwest Airlines to name just a few – that can easily bump up your total Best Buy bill if you need a little help.
Tock is a new one to me, so I’ll let you check it out and see if it’s an option for your 5x spend or not.
This Chase Pay promotion runs from now through September 30, 2018.
*Update: Some have pointed out the language for this deal makes it seem that you can earn an extra 5 UR points per dollar spent over and above what your card would normally earn. Meaning, a Sapphire Preferred would earn 6 UR points at the above retailers. That would make this deal a bit better, but I’m not sure that’s Chase’s intention. Maybe go into this deal thinking you’ll get 5x, and if you get 6x, great, if not, oh well.
Paying with Chase Pay
Both Tock and eBags are online-only retailers, so paying with Chase Pay is as easy as finding the Chase Pay logo on the payment page and signing into your Chase account to select your payment option.
Best Buy only allows you to use Chase Pay in-store, so you’ll need to download the Chase Pay app to your smartphone and pay by scanning the Chase Pay QR code at the checkout register.
Credit Cards
In previous Chase Pay promotions, all Ultimate Rewards earning cards could be used to earn the extra UR points.
So far, I’ve just seen the offer available for the Sapphire family of cards (Sapphire, Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve).
And there is a chance this is a targeted promotion, available to only those who’ve received an email regarding the promotion.
I’ll update if more information becomes available.
*Update: There are a few reports that Freedom cards can get this deal, too. However, it also seems this is a targeted offer, available only to those Chase has emailed the promo to. If you hold an Ultimate Rewards earning card, are interested in this offer, but haven’t seen an email, you can call the Chase toll-free number on the back of your card to see if the offer is connected to your specific credit card(s).
Chase Pay
Yes, this promotion does involve a little effort in that you must use Chase Pay to make your payment. If you’re not familiar with Chase Pay, you can find more info here.
Account set up is fairly simple, just download the Chase Pay app to your smartphone and follow the prompts. Or you can log in to your Chase Ultimate Rewards earning credit card account and under the Pay & Transfer dropdown link at the top of the page you’ll see a link for Chase Pay. Select it and you can quickly set up and activate your Chase Pay account.
Obviously, for the Best Buy promo, you’ll then have to download the Chase Pay app anyway. But, it might be easier to set up the Chase Pay account on a tablet/desktop. Your call.
Then, going forward, you’ll just have to enter your Chase account log in info when you pay with Chase Pay.
Wrap Up
The fact that you have to use the Chase Pay app on your smartphone to pay in-store at Best Buy is a bit of a hassle. I like the ease of online shopping and payment. But, to earn extra Ultimate Rewards points, I just might put in the effort.
The key for me, however, will be if there’s anything at any of the retailers that I was going to purchase anyway. An extra 800 Ultimate Rewards points is nice, but it’s likely not an amount that will make me put too much effort into taking advantage of this deal.
While I appreciate Chase providing the option for earning more Ultimate Rewards points, the 10x deals from last year were much more enticing.
How about you? Are you going to take advantage of this 5x UR point earning promotion?
