Select State Farm Homeowner Insurance Customers Can Get a Free Three-Year Subscription to the Ting Electrical Fire Prevention Service

Select State Farm homeowner insurance customers can get a free three-year subscription to the Ting electrical fire prevention service and a $1,000 credit toward electrical repairs that may be found as a result of the Ting service with this policyholder perk.

To avoid wasting some readers’ time, here is a list of states in which this offer is available to State Farm homeowner insurance policyholders – AL, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KY, ME, MA, MS, MO, MT, NV, NH, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA and WV.

If you live in one of the above-listed states, you should be eligible for a free Ting plug-in sensor and 3-year electrical fire prevention service subscription.

As long as you remain a State Farm homeowners insurance customer, the free service will continue for the 3-year duration. If you change insurance companies, the free service will end and you’ll (likely) be required to return the Ting plug-in sensor.

If you were to purchase a Ting sensor and one year of service it prices at $349, with an annual $99 per year fee for each subsequent year you subscribe.

And, whether you get the free Ting sensor and service through State Farm, or buy it yourself, you also receive a $1,000 service credit for electrical hazard remediation when that remediation is coordinated by a Ting agent and a Ting-certified electrician performs the work.

While this post is specific to State Farm, other homeowner insurance providers may offer a similar deal.

And, as a full-disclosure point, State Farm via State Farm Ventures was/is an investor in Whisker Labs and its development and distribution of the Ting sensing technology.

What is Ting?

Ting is a smart electrical monitor that helps to detect and prevent home electrical fires.

It was developed by Whisker Labs, a Maryland technology company in 2018.

I won’t get into the mechanical specifics of Ting, other than to say it detects – and learns what is normal for your home – micro-arcing in your house’s electrical wiring that may lead to a fire. When anomalies are detected, they are transmitted to Whisker Labs, and ultimately to the Ting app for your review.

Additionally, the data that Ting collects via the plugged-in Ting sensor, and provides to the customer via a weekly email, can be used to check not only the voltage your home is using and the kinds of changes that occur throughout the day/week, but also issues that may be a result of the electrical providers’ (utility), helping to address those outside issues, too.

Of course, the Ting plug-in sensor will need to be connected at all times and have access to your WiFi network to operate properly.

For an overview and personal review of the Ting service, this article by Jay Basen titled “Ting from Whisker Labs Helps Prevent Home Electrical Fires” is a good read.

You can also get more info on the service on the Ting website.

And, if you have a State Farm online account, you should be able to log in via this link and sign-up for the free Ting plug-in sensor and service. There should also be a link in the State Farm app for signing up if that’s your preference.

Downsides?

I always try to look at all sides of an issue or deal before making a decision.

Make no mistake, the Ting technology will allow State Farm, or any other insurance company with which the Ting service is associated, access to your home’s information that it otherwise would not have.

This should only apply to your home’s electrical system and operation, though.

Would State Farm use this information against a policyholder should there be an issue.

A quick answer, I would think, would be no…as long as the homeowner addressed any issues that the Ting technology brought to light.

If Ting made the homeowner, and State Farm, aware of an electrical issue in the home, and that issue was not addressed and subsequently resulted in a fire, State Farm may have a reason to not cover the incident.

Which is why the Ting service also comes with the $1,000 electrical service credit – as long as Ting coordinates the repairs with Ting associated electricians – I guess. The credit helps to address issues that are found before they result in a fire.

Bottom line, the money State Farm puts out for the Ting service is likely a small portion of what they would have to pay if an electrical fire causes significant damage to an insured home. It’s in State Farm’s best interest to head off these potentially high-cost incidents before they happen.

And that’s what Ting is designed to do.

But, for some, the intrusive nature of the technology is something that needs to be carefully weighed against the benefit it likely could offer.

Just something to keep in mind as you consider whether this free Ting service is right for you.

Wrap Up

State Farm is offering many of its homeowner insurance policy customers a free Ting sensor and three years of the Ting electrical fire prevention service.

As long as you live in one of the states in which this policyholder perk is available, signing up is fairly easy.
